Temasek Review 2022
Sustainability at the Core

Driving Partnerships for Change

Proactive and committed collaboration will be key to achieving the systemic changes required to solve sustainability challenges.

Given the urgency, scale and cross-disciplinary nature of the necessary transitions, there is a need for government, corporations and investors to work together to define transition roadmaps as well as promote and drive adoption of new solutions.

We continue to catalyse solutions and advocate change by adding our voice to a spectrum of international platforms and investor and business networks that share our vision of achieving an abc World of active and productive economies, beautiful and inclusive societies, and a clean, cool Earth.

We are a member of the World Economic Forum, the Focusing Capital on the Long Term Initiative and participate in the Investor Advisory Group of the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board and the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Markets. We are in continuous dialogue with various global industry groups that drive the transformation of the financial industry towards sustainability, including the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero, the UN-convened Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance, Principles for Responsible Investment, the International Sustainability Standards Board, and others. As a member of the Green Finance Industry Task Force under Singapore’s Financial Centre Advisory Panel convened by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, we are actively involved in shaping recommendations to promote green finance, including transition financing, in Asia.

We also seek to work alongside leaders in the field of impact, to grow our knowledge on how impact investing and financing can accelerate innovation and scale solutions for a just society. Last year, we contributed to the G7 Impact Task Force, a global initiative created to advise how private capital can be mobilised for public good at scale, while achieving impact, transparency and integrity. We have also joined the Global Impact Investing Network’s Investor Council, which convenes committed and experienced impact investors to contribute to key industry initiatives and developments.

We continue to catalyse solutions and advocate change by adding our voice to a spectrum of international platforms and investor and business networks.

To stay informed of the latest developments and industry updates on energy transition, Temasek joined the Hydrogen Council in 2021. This engagement is an expression of our intent to collaborate with organisations across the value chain, to support an accelerated energy transition.

As part of our commitment to capacity building in research and talent development for safe nuclear energy, Temasek co-funded a multi-year post-graduate scholarship programme for ASEAN students as part of the Singapore Nuclear Research and Safety Initiative. These students seek to advance their studies in nuclear-related disciplines, and are expected to support nuclear safety-related research in Singapore and the region. In addition, we funded a Fusion Chair Professorship at Nanyang Technological University which aims to develop nuclear fusion-related talents at the university.

Our annual Ecosperity conference, first held in 2014, promotes the twinning of ecology and prosperity for sustainable growth. It brings together key decision makers, such as business leaders, policymakers, investors and civil society, to share insights and best practices on sustainable development. In 2021, the Ecosperity Week was held in a hybrid format, with over 1,000 delegates joining live via a virtual conference platform. Themed “Tomorrow Starts Today – From Crisis to Opportunity”, discussions centred on opportunities in decarbonisation and climate action, and reimagining nature and resources.

Temasek, BlackRock and the International Finance Corporation, also organised the inaugural Singapore Sustainable Investing & Financing Conference (SSIFC) that was held in conjunction with last year‘s Ecosperity Week. SSIFC’s theme was “Bridging the Gap – Advancing Asia’s Sustainable Future”. The conference highlighted the important role of the financial sector in accelerating the climate transition and sparked deep conversations about the drivers needed to catalyse sustainable investing and financing.

In November 2021, Temasek supported the inaugural Philanthropy Asia Summit which was organised by Temasek Foundation to catalyse multi-sector stakeholder networks for action towards “Advancing Human Security and Community Resilience”. This summit aims to drive positive impact towards climate action and sustainable communities, inclusive education, and pandemic security.

In addition, we continued to engage our portfolio companies and a wide group of stakeholders through our regular Ecosperity Conversations series. Highlights included discussions on sustainable aviation fuel and scaling up nature-based climate solutions.
